The client

Sociedad Excursionista de Málaga is a sports club founded in 1906. It has around 400 members and sections for mountaineering, caving, diving, kayaking, photography and Nordic walking. The club is very much alive, but its website didn’t show it.

The problem

The website had fallen behind. Activities weren’t being updated, some links and icons led nowhere, and a few sections still had placeholder text.

For a club, the website is often the first thing a potential member sees. If they find activities from months ago, they’ll assume the club is inactive and leave without asking.

They were looking to renew it, so I offered to build it.

The decisions

I chose Astro because the site is mostly content: activities, sections, a gallery and contact details. Astro generates static pages and ships almost no JavaScript to the browser, so the site loads fast even on a poor connection, which is exactly when someone opens it on their phone before an outing.

For hosting we set up a new VPS for the club. That way the site doesn’t depend on anyone else and the club controls its own infrastructure. After that, it was just a matter of pointing the domain to the new server.

The result

The club now has a fast website with up-to-date activities and everything a prospective member needs: sections, upcoming outings, how to join and how to get in touch.

The most important part isn’t technical: the site finally shows that the club is still active. Visitors see scheduled outings and upcoming events, and that confidence is what encourages people to sign up.
